The Tucson Alliance for Housing Justice is a coalition of community members and collaborative organizations who care deeply about the future of housing justice. We focus specifically on Tucson aka Cukson and Southern Arizona. We are decolonial, anti-racist and rooted in well-researched history and working towards evidence-based and realistic solutions. We work to address the inadequate supply of affordable and accessible housing, prevent the displacement of households, and reduce the deep racial and ethnic inequalities in housing and ownership in our community. We believe in solidarity not charity, and seek to build power and advocacy with those with lived experience. We honor intersectionality and the complexity of our realities.
We formed in 2021 in response to the eviction crisis during COVID and continue to build together for longer-term, systemic solutions for housing justice.
Mission Statement
The Tucson Alliance for Housing Justice shifts mindsets and practices around renting, real estate, and property ownership to prioritize sustainable and equitable relationships with people and the planet.
We acknowledge that all efforts are happening on colonized Indigenous land, and that the colonial roots of property ownership are inherently damaging. We explicitly support restorative efforts such as LandBack and dedicate a portion of our annual budget to Native Land tax.
We also believe that within our current system, property ownership and community control of land can support the security and self-determination of our communities. Housing is a human right and we believe that with cooperation, strategy and support, together we can end the housing crisis.
How we operate: We believe that real, effective change begins with deep listening, empathy, and bridge building. We seek out the participation of those with lived experience but we resist tokenization. While we believe that it is brave and powerful to share stories of lived experience, we do not exploit folks' stories to further our goals. While we reject the status quo, and urgency as a mechanism of the status quo, we are action oriented.
What to expect: In meetings we hold each other accountable and encourage a “move up, move back” approach. We prefer the use of plain, clear language and employ regular literacy moments in order to make the work accessible and inclusive. We expect that folks who join us in this movement will share these values and avoid mean-spirited criticism or any rhetoric that decenters the autonomy of marginalized folks, in particular our unsheltered neighbors. We begin each meeting with grounding, gratitude and land acknowledgment and a brief update on the current state of housing in southern AZ. Meetings are efficient and facilitated but we also prioritize making time in each meeting for personal sharing in small groups, as we believe relationship building is central to this work.
